Ingredients
For Crispy Mackerel Fillets
- 2 cans King Oscar Mackerel in Olive Oil, drained
- 1/2 cup flour, or more if needed
- 1 egg, beaten, or more if needed
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs, or more if needed
Tartar Sauce
- 1 cup mayo
- 2 tbsp fresh chopped dill
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 2 tbsp minced onion
- 2 tbsp minced pickles (sweet or dill depending on preference)
A love letter to fish and chips. Mackerel breaded and lightly fried until golden and served with a fresh homemade tartar sauce spiked fresh dill and lemon.
Instructions
- Make the tartar sauce: mix together the mayo, dill, lemon juice, garlic powder, onion, and pickles until evenly combined. Cover and keep in the fridge until ready to serve.
- Drain the mackerel. Invert the cans onto a large plate or cutting board. Carefully break the mackerel chunks into large strips. Press the remaining loose pieces together and form into another strip or two.
- Place the flour, beaten egg, and breadcrumbs into 3 individual shallow bowls.
- Dip each mackerel strip into flour, then egg, then breadcrumbs.
- Heat about 1/2” of oil in a pan over medium-high heat. When it is about 350°F, carefully place the breaded mackerel pieces in the oil.
- Fry each side until golden brown, about 1-2 minute per side or until golden.
- Drain on paper towels and serve with tartar sauce if desired.
