WHAT WE OWE THE SEA

THE CROWN’S COMMITMENT
OUR STANDARD TO UPHOLD
For over a century, King Oscar has depended on healthy oceans and the people who work them. That's not something we take lightly. The Crown's Commitment is how we hold ourselves accountable: responsible sourcing, reduced environmental impact, and fair treatment of the people who make it possible.

SOURCING
EVERY CATCH ACCOUNTED FOR
King Oscar sources seafood from the North Atlantic and waters beyond, from wild caught sardines and mackerel to responsibly farmed salmon and ASC-certified mussels. We're committed to ensuring every species comes from stocks managed within biologically sustainable levels by 2030, and we require all partner vessels to implement best practices against illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing.

CLIMATE
A PATH TO NET ZERO
Research suggests that small pelagic fish like sardines, mackerel, and herring carry a smaller carbon footprint than nearly any other animal protein source. We're building on that advantage: reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 42% by 2030, with a goal of net zero by 2050. Across every stage of production, from sourcing to packaging, we're actively measuring our impact to make sure those numbers keep moving in the right direction.

PEOPLE
BEHIND EVERY TIN
Safe and legal labor practices are built into how we operate at every level of our supply chain. We comply with the Norwegian Transparency Act, requiring due diligence on human rights and working conditions, because the people who catch, prepare, and pack our seafood deserve the same care we put into the product itself.
UNDER THE LID

How Our Facilities Run
Our primary facility in Gniewino, Poland runs on 40% renewable electricity, with on-site solar panels and a high-efficiency boiler that's reduced gas consumption by nearly 20% and chemical water treatment by 50%. An upgraded wastewater system lowers chemical oxygen demand, and the remaining sediment is repurposed for local energy production. Our plant in Svolvær, Norway pulls 100% of its electricity from hydropower and wind.

The Tin
King Oscar predominantly uses aluminum cans made from about 40% recycled content, and they're infinitely recyclable. Their light weight reduces shipping impact, and their long shelf life minimizes food waste while eliminating the need for refrigeration during transport or storage. We're working to further reduce packaging weight and remove unnecessary plastics across our full product line.
